Your Eyes: True or False?

March 28, 2022

There are myths, speculations and opinions on just about every subject around. Eyes and vision are among those topics. When you want to separate fact from fiction, turn to an optometrist for “the real deal.”

At Oronoque Eye Care, the care and comfort of our patrons are our priorities. You will receive personal attention throughout every step of the process. We consider every patient to be unique, and we know that individual preferences vary. Our goal is to offer a clear picture of all of your options and deliver the results you expect. We use state-of-the-art knowledge and technology to perform a complete array of services with the utmost thought and precision.

We want to clear some things up for you.

Fact: Eating carrots can improve your vision. They have lots of vitamin A, which is important for your vision health. But you needn’t rely on only the favorite food of Bugs Bunny. Milk, liver, egg yolks and cheese also have vitamin A.

Fiction: Reading in low light diminishes your eyesight. The dim illumination might give you a headache or cause eyestrain, but it won’t weaken your peepers.

Fact: Never stare at the sun, especially in the middle of the day. Doing so will temporarily distort your vision and give you a headache. Much more importantly, however, gazing at Ol’ Sol can also do permanent damage to your retina. The sun’s UV rays (ultraviolet radiation) get into your eyes regularly anyway, so deliberately letting them in is even worse. UV exposure can lead to macular degeneration, cataracts, solar retinitis and other destructive eye disorders.

Fiction: Eyeglasses and contact lenses will weaken your eyesight, and you’ll become dependent on them. Your prescription may have to be upped over time as you get older or due to disease, but your vision will otherwise stay the same.

Fact: It’s dangerous to look at the sun during a solar eclipse. There may seem no harm in it, but it’s there. Though the sunlight is obscured, the hazardous, imperceptible rays that can harm your eyes forever are still beaming down. So in other words, don’t do it!

We at the office of Oronoque Eye Care take pride in our outstanding service, attention to detail and friendly professionalism. We look forward to exceeding your high expectations. Please call us today for an appointment.
